Started in Kelantan dialect, yang lebih fasih untuk aku daripada Bahasa Malaysia. This is also to continue the tradition of mak Yong theatre yang sudah diiktiraf UNESCO sebagai warisan dunia, only my play is a new story and not about kings and princes but about human being like us, you and me. This is also the continuation of Selipar jepun, the next one would be Stiletto Merah, partly completed, but I left it for awhile, may be after I complete this one, which I like to stage it with my improvisation class.
In Selipar Jepun also I brought in makyong form, not entirely in it, and of course the famous drag show or rather what we call miming and lipsying, entirely different thing from tradition. When I call it experimental, a lot of people mungkin tak setuju dan mengerutkan dahi, so this time I am calling it Teater Eksperimentradisi, boleh tak? I am selecting few songs that are closer to the story, period and characters but may be not entirely in dikir form or perhaps modern dikir form too .
Last week I saw Rohani Yusoff brought in Dikir Barat in ONE OF THE CHARACTERS IN THE new work "Saya Dari Hujung Kota", the kolaj work of Nordin Hassan, CINDAI, 1400, SIREH BERTEPUK PINANG MENARI, INTAN TERCANAI. May be Nordin Hassan has been using these traditional elemens in his plays, he has been mixing makyong and boria in his work, which is interesting! Azanin also has brought in wayang, makyong, silat, asyik, terinai, gamelan in her dance theatre work in the past, so the kolaj or forms is nothing new, but needs to be continued. In visual arts collage could be considered modern, especially if we look at works by nik zainal abidin, mixing images of wayang, dikir etc from the arts of Kelantan. But I am calling it Contemporary Based Tradition
I am starting with Dikir Barat again, a popular genre of performing arts, not theatre, but performance, so I am bringing it to be a theatrical form. I am also bringing the idea from Selipar Jepun ( staged in 2007 though the play was ready in 2005) or rather the continuation of performance concept.
Starting with famous Wau Bulan song from dikir barat but a twist to "Terompah Manik". I also wish I could go back to theatre in the round, mak yong and randai has this form, but what I like to do is to bring in silat jatuh or silat pulut of kelantan, that would be fun no? It's a story about adik beradik yang baru kematian ibu dan kesulitan membahagikan harta peninggalan arwah, i like it to be a story about family, tragedy and at the same time could be a comedy, boleh tak? Ada penulis2 zaman selepas shakespeare pun membuat karya-karya seperti ini yang menggabungkan keduanya, but how? Oh satu lagi , boleh tak rasanya if i bring in pantun? boring tak?
Selepas mendapat beberapa cadangan daripada teman yang mencadangkan masukkan bunyi dan prop terompah dan payung, aku setuju, mungkin itu dah masuk process pementasan, tapi elok juga.
